The statistic would suggest the Premier League is in decline, that for all our boasts about possessing the most exciting league in the world” we no longer have the best.Between 2007-9, the Premier League had nine Champions League semi-finalists between 2010-13 we will have had just three. Our power is on the wane and Europe is striking back. For most people it does not bode well, although I think the opposite may be true.While the television commentators may be ready to read the Premier League’s last rites, while other pundits may want to question why we have allowed those pesky Germans and suave Spaniards to be better than us and while Roy Keane may want to glare menacingly at the camera as though someone has just asked him what hair dye product he uses, I’m not alarmed or worried.To explain why, I point you in the direction of the much-maligned Europa League.The Europa League is Uefa’s booby prize. It brings a stack load of games, a lot of travelling and a huge amount of disruption to a domestic campaign with paltry financial rewards and little kudos.
